What Is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial release (MFR) is a safe and highly effective, hands-on technique that involves applying gentle, sustained pressure to the myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. This therapy targets the fascia, a web-like system of connective tissues that surrounds and supports the muscles, bones, nerves, and organs of the body.

The fascia can become restricted due to trauma, inflammatory responses, or surgical procedures, leading to pain and reduced function.

Myofascial release works by:

  • Identifying Restrictions: Therapists use their hands to feel for areas of tightness or tension in the fascia.
  • Applying Pressure: Gentle, sustained pressure is applied to the fascia, encouraging it to soften and stretch.
  • Releasing Tension: As the fascia releases, blood flow and nutrient delivery improve, promoting healing and reducing pain.

Benefits of Myofascial Release:

  • Pain Reduction: It’s effective for chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia, back pain, and migraines.
  • Improved Mobility: It restores movement and flexibility, making it beneficial for conditions like frozen shoulder or joint stiffness.
  • Enhanced Recovery: It aids in faster recovery from injuries by improving blood flow and reducing inflammation.
  • Stress Relief: It promotes relaxation by reducing muscle tension and improving overall well-being.

Myofascial Release Is Suitable for Individuals Experiencing:

  • Chronic pain
  • Muscle stiffness or tightness
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Post-surgical recovery
  • Sports injuries
  • Stress-related conditions

During an MFR session, you will lie comfortably on a massage table while the therapist uses their hands to gently stretch and apply pressure to the fascia. Sessions are typically 60-90 minutes long and are customized to your specific needs. Unlike other therapies, MFR does not use oils or lotions, and the pressure applied is always within your comfort level.
